Jamaican Curry Goat

This is the fourteenth instalment in our “Food I fondly remember” interview series which is aimed at introducing Japanese to odds defying Jamaican and their Jamaican soul foods which many Japanese have never experienced but are really worth trying.

Featured in this our fourteenth interview is Christopher Gentles – a true son of the soil – no pun intended. When I caught up with Christopher for his interview on a Friday night, it had happened to be boys night. He had just picked up his son Daniel from soccer (football) practice as his wife was hanging out with their daughter. His son was the one who helped to rescue our interview from the clutches of technical glitches. Thanks for your help Daniel.

Christopher was born and bred in the salubrious hilly interiors of the central Jamaican parish of Manchester in a town called Coleyville. As the name suggests, Coleyville (https://www.windy.com/18.206/-77.506?2020-12-15-21,18.197,-77.495,14,m:ebvadZY or https://www.worldweatheronline.com/coleyville-weather/manchester/jm.aspx) nestled high in the mountains of central Jamaica is reputed to be second only to the Blue Mountain Peak (https://www.windy.com/18.047/-76.579?temp,2020-12-15-21,18.038,-76.579,14,m:ebfad1x or https://www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/Blue-Mountain-Peak/forecasts/2256) as one of the coldest places in Jamaica. Rumours have it that Coleyville is so cold that you have to keep your teapot on the open flames between sips if you really want to enjoy a warm brew.

Christopher grew up in a farming family. Like his grandfather and his father before him, Christopher spent his formative years split in the fields and at the Mandeville Hospital where his mother worked as a senior nurse. The family specialized in banana cultivation along with some High Mountain Coffee. Their family farm provided employment for 20 to 30 farm hands from the community. He recalls the amazing adventures he had on the farm growing up, especially around reaping time. The workers on the farm would cook a massive pot of whatever they could get their hands on and he would receive his servings which usually included some giant-sized boiled dumplings, bananas, yam and the meat of the day. He particularly had vivid memories of tearing through some shad or other salted meat or fish. The meals were served on banana leaf. Those were unbelievably finger-licking delicious.
