Salt Mackerel Rundown

Donald has travelled the globe representing Jamaica in his capacity as both a player, coach and manager. A few years ago, he graced Japanese soil onroute to China with the Jamaica table tennis team as the coach/manager. He has also been instrumental in establishing regular coaching clinics of aspiring Jamaican table tennis stars in Japan and worked alongside coach Takashima – a JICA volunteer (affectionately called “Take”) who coached the national senior and junior teams of Jamaica for over 2 years.

According to Donald, “Take” is one of the most travelled “honorary Jamaican”. He has been to every nook and cranny of the island and has been into the coffee fields of the Blue Mountains several times. Three years ago, Japan hosted a junior table tennis team from Jamaica which included Donald’s nephew – a prodigy of sorts – walking in his uncle’s footsteps. To date Donald is still very close friends with coach Takashima whom he sends Blue Mountain Coffee to on occasion.

Having spent his entire life in farming, Donald following in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps went into coffee farming. At the time, like his father before him, he worked for the Matalons at Serge Island. While working there in the early 1990s (1991-92) he was introduced to coffee through a family friend by the name of Truman Williams who was at the time Secretary/Manager  of the Portland Blue Mountain Coffee Cooperative.

At the time when he got his feet wet in coffee farming, the Japanese and Jamaican governments had started a loan scheme project in the Claterty Cottage and Shirley Castle area of the parish of Portland. Through this special loan scheme, farmers were able to lease Blue Mountain Coffee 5 or 10 acre farm lots at a substantial discount to encourage greater farming participation and a guaranteed income source. This project was funded by the Japanese Government . He was introduced to the then Coffee Industry Board (CIB) now the Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Association (JACRA) to arrange a site visit and secure one of the Blue Mountain Coffee farm lots.
He met the CIB field / liaison officer in Buff Bay, Portland. [Up to that time, although he was living in one of the four parishes which are home to the protected Blue and John Crow Mountain ranges and he had studied geography in high school, he was clueless to the world’s best (Jamaica Blue Mountain) Coffee. In fact, he had been taught extensively about Brazillian coffee. He learnt nothing about Blue Mountain Coffee which was literally grown in his backyard].

His initial thought was that the land to be leased was going to be just around the corner from Buff Bay square (town centre). This country corner turned out to be over 12 miles (19 km) of winding and bumpy and mostly perilously narrow and unpaved mountain road high up into the mountain past Tranquility, Bangor Ridge, Mahoe on what felt like an endlessly punishing drive. All the while, he kept thinking to himself that he would not be taking the land. It was way too far away from civilisation. He was also reminded continuously in his conscious thoughts that out of respect for Mr. Williams, a very close family friend, he could not decline the offer. He was boxed into a corner. He had to sign the deal. If only he had known what he was getting himself into, he would have opted out from the very beginning.

Needless to say, Donald has not left coffee farming in the Blue Mountains. He has since left Portland and has gone even higher up on the St. Andrew side of the Blue Mountain where he presently farms. His farm which sits at 5,000 feet above sea level (1,524 meters), is within the protected UNESCO designated World Natural and Intangible Cultural Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park about 1 mile (1.6 km) from the Protected Cinchona National Park. Cinchona National Park is just above Wesphalia – the highest inhabited village in Jamaica. Most notably, located in the Cinchona National Park is a special Japanese tree which was planted there sometime in the 19th century.
