This is the third instalment in our \u201cFood I Fondly Remember\u201d interview series which is aimed at introducing Japanese to soul foods of Jamaica which many Japanese have never experienced but are really worth trying.<\/p>\n

Meet Cherise (Howell) Ige a \u201cSolid as a Rock\u201d odds defying Jamaican woman who sees challenges as truly character strengthening. Cherise is the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of one of the world\u2019s largest insurance and financial services multi-national corporations (MNC). She is now based in Ghana. Cherise \u2013 the epitome of positivity and a genuine people\u2019s person – was born and bred in the Mountain View community of East Kingston located about 5 miles (8 km) east of downtown Kingston and about 6 miles north of the Norman Manley International Airport. As a child growing up in East Kingston, Cherise\u2019s parents always knew she was destined for great things and were very supportive of her and her siblings strive towards excellence.<\/p>\n

Despite her parents attempts to ensure Cherise and her siblings were never in want, life was not always very kind to Cherise. In my interview with her, she recounts the very first time she had an epiphany moment. Growing up, she had the darkest complexion among all members of her family. She never knew this was a problem. But one day, at the very tender and impressionable age of five (5), she was singled out by her teacher for talking in class with her then best friend who happened to have been of a very light skin colour. When she enquired why her friend was not beaten, her teacher told her that her friend was very delicate and precious. This scare has remained with Cherise even to this very day.<\/p>\n

Fast forward to her high school experience. Once again Cherise was made to feel badly out of place and unwelcomed. Cherise was a naturally brilliant scholar growing up. This resulted in her skipping grades in primary school always making her the youngest and smartest in her class. She sat the then Jamaican high school placement exam called the \u201cCommon Entrance Examinations\u201d on her very first sitting. To the surprise of many, she had done so well, that she was awarded a place at Jamaica\u2019s most prestigious co-educational high school located about 2 miles (3.2 km) northwest of her home. For her and her family, this was truly a dream come true.<\/p>\n

That dream soon turned into a nightmare that would never go away. Not only was she ostracized by her fairer complexion school mates, but she was constantly reminded by her Grade 7 math teacher that she did not belong in the class because she was neither from a good enough neighbourhood nor was she white enough.<\/p>\n

Her Grade 7 math teacher gave them a pop test. To the teacher\u2019s surprise Cherise scored 94% on the test. The teacher then downgraded her score to 47% to destroy her confidence. This reality shock was like a 9.5 magnitude earthquake and 1815 Tambora, Indonesia volcano combined for a very young 10 year old high school student. The shock was as earth shattering as it was seismic. It was like all the subjunctive plates in the Pacific Rim of Fire had crashed into each other all at once. This led to Cherise\u2019s losing the will to excel. The writing was on the wall. The teacher had done her damage.<\/p>\n

Cherise also recounts an experience in grade 9. Her dad had given her the money to pay her tuition, but she forgot to pay it. This was the first and only time ever – her tuition payment was missed. Her father had always paid her tuition on time. This time he was unable to take time off from work to pay it as he had always done. She was called into the principal\u2019s office along with one of her light skin friends. Her friend was told to go back to class because the principal feared upsetting both her and her parents. Cherise was about to hand the tuition payments which she had in her pocket to the principal, but before she got the chance to, he started to make assumptions that her father was struggling to keep her in the high school. The principal thought her father could not afford her high school education, although her father had always paid her fees on time. She used the money to procure chocolate which she sold to her fellow students at a profit. After making a substantial profit, she then paid up her school fee. This was her first foray into finance and entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n

Her high school teachers and principal all thought Cherise would not make it in life because of her skin tone and home address. She was destined to fail\u2026 or was she?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Then, as fate would have it, just before sitting her Caribbean Examination Council\u2019s (CXC) external exams in Grade 11, someone was invited to give a career talk. The keynote speaker shared with the class how important a career in finance and accounting was for anyone who wanted to live well in life. This talk changed her life. She realised at that moment that she wanted to work in finance and accounting. She pulled herself up just as she was about to fall from the precipice of despair and despondency. She did very well on her CXC examinations. This success was a wakeup call that no one controlled her destiny.
\nAfter leaving high school she worked hard at getting herself accredited in accounting. This said however, there were numerous setbacks. She was unable to grow in her career in Jamaica. With Cherise unable to see any clear paths to success although she was putting in a lot of hard work, she decided to further her studies in England.<\/p>\n

Similar to her very first days in high school, Cherise had a pop test very soon after starting classes at her university in England. She aced it scoring a perfect 100%. This brought her confidence back. She initially started out in law but then decided to switch to accounting. Despite financial difficulties and the challenges of working to self-finance her degree, Cherise focused on her studies and graduated as one of the top students in her graduating class.<\/p>\n

Fresh out of university, Cherise was ready to start working in the financial capital of London. She sent out lots of applications but was unable to get a job. By this time, many of her cohort with much lower grades had already received very good job offers. All these cohorts who had secured the top jobs had inferior grades to Cherise\u2019s were Caucasians. To compound the concerns Cherise had, unlike her, none of them had received their Chartered Accountant accreditations. [Chartered Accountant accreditations is the U.K. professional standard and is similar to the CPA in the U.S.A.]. It took her over a year post graduation to finally get a temporary job.<\/p>\n

Her first job was as a contract (part-time) group accountant at the prestigious accounting firm which had huge interests in the Caribbean sugar industry. She remained in this position for six months before being offered a permanent position. At the accounting firm, she experienced first-hand racial discrimination from her immediate supervisor. She was often assigned projects which were to be done in at times in less than one-tenth of the prescribed time required both as the industry practice and the accounting firm\u2019s own standards and practices. They wanted her to miss the deadlines in order to have solid grounds on which to fire her. Each time she was given these huge hurdles, she proved her critics wrong. After 4 years of this, and after having just successfully directed a special project in Chelsea, Cherise decided it was time to find her solace elsewhere. Besides, for her, this was just a stepping stone. She has always seen herself working on the top floor of one of the global accounting firms.<\/p>\n

After leaving the prestigious accounting firm, Cherise founded her very own hair and cosmetics supply company in East London. Soon after becoming an entrepreneur in 2011, her agent informed her of an opening one of the world\u2019s largest insurance and financial services MNCs. Although it was a side grade, Cherise knew this was a shoe into the financial services industry. She spent 4 years in a position she had originally intended to spend 2 years. During this time she successfully interviewed for the Financial Controller of Asia at its Hong Kong Headquarters. Once again she experienced racial discriminations. Her manager gave unsavoury feedback about her to the Hong Kong team which resulted in her losing out on the opportunity. Time after time this was the sequence of events.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

While all this was happening, Cherise a very talented netballer from her days in Jamaica was being scouted by the England Netball Team. Going back to her days in Jamaica, Cherise was a reserve member of the Jamaica National Netball team. The Jamaica Netball team is constantly ranked 3rd or 4th globally. The other national teams which round out the top four teams are New Zealand, Australia and England.<\/p>\n

Cherise played both in the UK Club Netball Sunday League and County League. It was while playing one of her usual starting role for her county\u2019s team that her talent was spotted and she was invited to try out for the England National Netball Team. The rest as the saying goes, became history. Pretty soon afterwards Cherise became a regular on the England National Netball Team. She played netball all over the world with the English national team. While many of her peers in her office were very happy for her as a member of one of the world\u2019s best netball teams, her manager openly asked if she had the physiological traits required to excel in a white sport.<\/p>\n

Cherise knew she had overstayed her welcome. She knew if she were to remain at this huge insurance and financial services MNC, she had to work with a less overtly racially discriminating manager and HR Director or get a transfer to one of their overseas regional headquarters. As fate would have it, an opening in Ghana presented her the window of opportunity she needed. By the time both the HR director and her manager knew she had passed the previous seven out of eight interview tests for the Ghana transfer and promotion, it was too late for them to influence the outcome. She was appointed the CFO for Ghana and has been there to today.<\/p>\n

Through it all, Cherise has mentioned that her husband \u2013 a Nigerian by decent and a brilliant financier \u2013 has been a tower of strength and her biggest voice of reason and rationality. She has never felt more relaxed and welcomed as she now does in Ghana and would love to be able to live there for as long as is possible.<\/p>\n

After landing in Ghana, she started a netball forum to identify where she could play netball recreationally \u2013 now one of her biggest passions. She soon realized that because people had to make other things priority in their lives, netball was a distant after thought. Through her people\u2019s person skills she soon got a few people interested in playing netball regularly.<\/p>\n

Since moving there, she has invested her time, energy and effort into reviving netball as a national sport in Ghana. She has become fully integrated in the community as both a player, coach, manager and attracting sponsorships to fund sporting gears and equipment for the Ghana University. She has successfully taken her team to tour many countries in Europe such as Spain to play netball.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

That said however, growing up in Kingston was a blessing. For Cherise, the best gift from nature ever is without a doubt mangoes. Mangoes make Cherise\u2019s \u201cHeart Dance.\u201d Traditionally, mango season are in the summer months of June and July predominately. But in Kingston, where everyone who has a backyard has at least one mango tree, mangoes have no seasons. Some people believe this is because most Kingstonians have zero sense of planting things.<\/p>\n

For regular people who loved their \u201cBrown Stewed Chicken with Rice and Peas\u201d or \u201cStew Peas and White Rice,\u201d mangoes are the only thing which make people in Jamaica forget about food. When it is mango season in Jamaica, many people put away their pots. They eat mangoes for breakfast, mangoes for lunch and mangoes for dinner.
