She epitomises \u201clionheart.\u201d She is a rock. A true gem and a true entrepreneur. As a woman in any society, the decks are heavily stacked against you from birth. As a woman of colour, you have been dealt a crushing blow. As a woman of colour who was born and bred in the inner cities of Kingston, Jamaica, you were surrounded by despair. As woman who had lost her mother way before she had completed school, hope for success was all but stolen from her.<\/p>\n<p>This is the true story of many people the world over. Many of us reading this article may never ever be able to fathom this harsh reality. A harsh reality compounded by one\u2019s gender, socio-economic circumstances and magnified by the hue of one\u2019s complexion. Growing up in the Denham Town community along North Street in West Kingston, Jamaica for Vasiana was a big challenge.<\/p>\n<p>Back in the days Kingston was one of the nicest places to live. Denham Town in Kingston 14, is the birthplace of Jamaican musical legend Gregory Isaacs and many of today\u2019s prominent leaders in all spheres of influence in the Jamaican landscape. The culture back then was like a village. Everyone cared for each other. All kids were cared for by the adults around them despite their own financial limitations. Then over time, this utopian society came crashing down round about the mid-1970s.<\/p>\n<p>This was the result of political polarisation brought about by ideological differences due to differences between the two leading political parties of Jamaica. Needless to say, this resulted in a mass exodus of many of West Kingston\u2019s then residents. Many of whom were home owners of West Kingston. The exodus also involved many of the major business interests in West Kingston. As a result lawlessness became the order of the day. Unfortunately for Vasiana, her family was one of the many which were left behind. It was too late for them to move out. They were trapped.<\/p>\n<p>Having lost her mother at a tender age and with her father\u2019s absence, Vasiana was raised by her maternal grandparents. Both of whom loved her dearly. Her grandmother provided for her and ensured she was never in want of the basic necessities of live. But like many young girls from the inner city \u2013 she eventually fell prey to early pregnancy in her teens.<\/p>\n<p>Vasiana was driven however. She had resolved early on in life that she was going to break this spiral and pull herself out of the doldrums in which she had been dealt such a heavy hand. For her however, this only helped to strengthen her resolve to being the best mother her son could ever have. Unlike many people caught in a similar predicament, she saw her son as a blessing \u2013 a gift from God.<\/p>\n<p>As a young single teenage mother, Vasiana had to forego further academic ambitions. She had to get a job to feed both herself, her son and her grandmother \u2013 whose health was starting to fail her. Coupled with this, she also had to provide for her two younger brothers \u2013 as the eldest child. She had now taken on the full role as the family\u2019s matriarch. As tough as this was for a very young 17 year old matriarch \u2013 she knew that she had to do everything humanly possible to ensure her brothers were not in want of anything. She had to keep them out of the clutches of taking the wrong path in life. She had to keep them in school. Vasiana had to ensure they did not get caught up in crime.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"jpn\">\n<h3>\u304a\u3070\u3042\u3061\u3083\u3093\u306e\u30b9\u30c6\u30e5\u30fc\u30fb\u30d4\u30fc\u30ba<\/h3>\n<p>\u3053\u306e\u30a4\u30f3\u30bf\u30d3\u30e5\u30fc\u30b7\u30ea\u30fc\u30ba\u306f\u3001\u65e5\u672c\u4eba\u306e\u591a\u304f\u304c\u7d4c\u9a13\u3057\u305f\u3053\u3068\u306e\u306a\u3044\u30b8\u30e3\u30de\u30a4\u30ab\u306e\u30bd\u30a6\u30eb\u30d5\u30fc\u30c9\u3092\u7d39\u4ecb\u3059\u308b\u3053\u3068\u3092\u76ee\u7684\u3068\u3057\u305f\u3001&#8221;Food The pay was the minimum permitted under law \u2013 a wage that was below the \u201cliveable wage.\u201d She toiled away at this job and gave it her all. Her leadership skills were soon rewarded. To help subsidise her paltry income, she started doing side jobs in events promotion. Always seeking ways to improve herself \u2013 she knew that in order to do so, she had to start her own business.<\/p>\n<p>By the time her son was one year old, Vasiana and her grandmother were finally able to say goodbye to North Street in 1995. They moved to one of the largest bed towns of Kington named Portmore. Portmore is the southwestern most part of St. Catherine &#8211; the largest parish of Jamaica. By this time, Vasiana had honed her skills in events and products promotions. She worked both day and night as a promoter of some of Jamaica\u2019s largest food giants such as Grace Kennedy Foods \u2013 a global food giant, Ramson and Wysinco to name a few. She was also the go to person for managing their bars at major parties and music events such as \u201cSting\u201d \u2013 known as the \u201cGreatest One Night Music Festival in the World.\u201d<br \/>\nWith the knowledge and experiences she had gained over the years, she soon started providing her services to individuals and small organisations who needed help both in planning, hosting and promoting their events. Word got around about her excellent talent and honesty. Soon she had a steady flow of clients and this was the birth of her entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n<p>Vasiana decided to take a bold step towards becoming her own boss and employer. Drawing on her expertise in bar management, events planning, hosting and promoting she decided the time had come for her to start her own formal business. She opened her first bar in Bayside, Portmore. With her deft people\u2019s skill, it did not take her too long before patrons started frequenting her bar. To further attract people to her bar and the other bars around. She approached the other bar owners to sell them the idea of a \u201cRound-Robin.\u201d [A \u201cRound-Robin\u201d is a type of event which helps to introduce patrons to other bars. Each of the bar involved is given a special date to host a big party. When well-coordinated, the hosting bar\u2019s sales for that night is very huge. There may be domino competitions, giveaways, and major sound systems playing that night \u2013 effectively making it a huge party]. Soon afterwards other bar owners started paying her to take their stock and help them set up their bar to run much more professionally organised and more efficiently.<\/p>\n<p>Through her visionary insights, she helped to significantly increase the sales of her fellow bar owners. This success would result in a major setback for her. Her landlord for her bar in Bayside, on seeing her success soon became as greedy as he was envious. In one year, he increased her rent five (5) times. Undaunted, she agreed to his rent hike every time. Soon after, her told her he needed to make some upgrade to his property and needed some help from her financially. Being a very kind person by nature and also being aware that this was where she had her business, she assisted him. All the while she was still paying her rent diligently. Not so long after she had assisted her landlord financially, he decided to put her out of his building. She had to get her lawyer involved to recover the money she had loaned him.<\/p>\n<p>This amounted to about 3 months\u2019 worth of rent. This afforded her enough time to find another location in Passage Fort. Her then landlord\u2019s attempt at bar ownership failed in less than a year. Since relocating to Passage Fort, she has expanded her business and has opened a second bar on Brentford Road close to the famous Studio One in Cross Roads, Kingston. Up until the forced emergency Lockdown of the entire island in March, she was doing fairly well and was in the process of making the final payment on a property in Innswood, St. Catherine to explore other business pursuits. The two months and three days lockdown has had a telling toll on her finances. Although both her bars had to be closed, both her landlords had demanded full payments of the rent without giving her a moratorium. To appease them, she had to use the money earmarked for finalising the payment on the property.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div We then went on to talk about what is the one Jamaican dish which gives her greatest solace \u2013 especially when she reminisces on her days in West Kingston. She loved all of her grandmother\u2019s dishes. Her grandmother made a very mean (mean = super tasty) Brown Stewed Chicken dish. Her Beef Soup was from a different time and place. Her Peas Soup took her breath away.<\/p>\n<p>But like Clive and so many other Jamaican, \u201cStew Peas with white rice\u201d was and still is like none other. This is the one dish which she can never get enough of. \u201cStew Peas and white rice\u201d with a lot of \u201cspinners\u201d \u2013 truly made her \u201cHeart Dance.\u201d She fondly remembers the great effort her grandmother \u2013 who was an extremely great cook \u2013 would go through to get all the prime ingredients needed to make the perfect pot of Stew Peas. So intoxicatingly flavourful was her grandmother\u2019s \u201cStew Peas\u201d people would literally stop at her gate in hope of getting a taste of her \u201cStew Peas\u201d which would take everyone\u2019s taste buds to the sixth (6th) dimension. Time and space stood still. It was truly something from the heavens. Grandma\u2019s \u201cStew Peas\u201d would always take everyone to another realm.<\/p>\n<p>She recalls how her grandmother would head off to the nearby Coronation Market \u2013 this is the largest and the number 1 market in Jamaica, the market where you would get the freshest and the best of Jamaica\u2019s farm produce from all fourteen parishes. She would painstakingly handpick each ingredient \u2013 the dried coconut \u2013 to make coconut milk, onions, fresh thyme, fresh St. Andrew scallion, garlic, choice Scotch Bonnet peppers, pimentos, and a quart of Red Kidney beans. Next she would go to another section of the market or to one of the meat shops near the market to buy the Pig Tail, Corned Pork, Corned Beef, and when the budget afforded \u2013 a nice big cut of fresh beef. And last but not least, she would pick up some flour and black pepper if she did not have enough at home.<\/p>\n<p>By early afternoon, her grandmother would have already prepared everything for the pot which she would then let slow cook over a charcoal fire. Cooking would be a good three hours at least. During this time, she remembers how distracting this was. In fact, she could not focus on her studies. She would salivate for what seems like forever. The best words she recalled hearing on Thursdays late in the afternoon was \u2013 \u201cdinner is ready.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When it was cooked, the meat was super tender, everything just literally melted away when it hit the palate of her mouth. Infused with the rustic smoky infusion of the charcoal \u2013 this was an experience beyond belief. Beyond words. This was true magic.<\/p>\n<p>It seems like <a href=\"\/mifood\/stewpeas\/\">Clive<\/a> and Vasiana will have to have a talk as to whose Stew Peas is the best. His mother\u2019s or her grandmother\u2019s. Like countless other Jamaican, Stew Peas is the one food that seems to make all our \u201cHearts Dance.\u201d One thing is for sure, unless you try Stew Peas when you visit Jamaica or dine at any one of Jamaica\u2019s fine dining establishments the world over \u2013 you are surely missing out on the true magic of Jamaican cuisine.<\/p>\n<p>If you ever visit Jamaica, and if you happen to be in Portmore or close to Studio One (recording studio) be sure to visit Vasiana\u2019s bar.
