Pawpaw

I am Addi a Naturalised Jamaican. I live in Kingston, in the Barbican area to be precise, which is not far from the Bob Marley Museum- one of our National Heritage, in my opinion.

A couple of universities such as the University of the West Indies (UWI), University of Technology and other places of higher learning are near me. For example, UWI is a great place to visit for sightseeing.

You can visit the University Chapel and some of the archeological artefacts nearby that detail Jamaica’s history.

Where I live, the streets are busy here especially on the weekends. At that time, you get to see the many types of people that make Jamaica land we love so great. Apart from the very known African and European legacy in Jamaica, there are Jamaican of other heritage such as Japanese, Chinese, Indian, and Jewish, and others that make the Jamaican culture so unique and diverse.

There are many things I like about the area where I live. For one, there are several supermarkets nearby.

Also, there are lots of restaurants, fast-food shops, jerk spots, malls, and shopping centres nearby as well as ice-cream stores. In the last 6-8 years, there has been a growth in Japanese restaurant patronage in the Kingston area. In fact, a few of them have infused local herbs and provisions into their cooking and recipe. The entertainment scene is GREAT! Events are always taking place like All Inclusive parties. Street dances are a must if you visit Kingston. I enjoy the art-shows and the rum festivals even though I do not drink. Our food festivals are authentic and a fantastic way to experience Jamaica in its purest form.

Ocho Rios, Negril and Montego Bay might be considered Tourists favourite destinations, but I still think Kingston rivals all of them-in fact, my opinion, of course; there are many sites and things to experience all over Jamaica. In Kingston you can get everything and anything Jamaican best when it comes to food. As cliché as this may sound, one of my favourite Jamaica food/meal is Jerked pork. I enjoy having my Jerked pork with rice and peas with a side of vegetables and mash-potatoes. I like my jerked pork mildly spicy. You can surely try it regular or very spicy if you like an adventure and you are not afraid of pepper. Above all else, I prefer my Jamaican beverage of mango, Papaya, and a tad bit of ginger drink- no sugar needs to be added, only a little bit of ice necessary- to accompany my meal. When you have this ensemble, oh bowy, it is heaven on earth to me.
