This is the fifth instalment in our “Food I fondly remember” interview series which is aimed at introducing Japanese to odds defying Jamaican and their Jamaican soul foods which many Japanese have never experienced but are really worth trying.
Meet Julius Brown – a true Jamaican by every definition of the word – and a professed Caribbean man. Julius is a senior manager of a small hotel chain owned by a Malaysian Palm Oil group which operates 12 hotels and are now in their 20th year in the hotel industry. The hotels operate under a licencing agreement with the Marriott Group. He is truly the man who was blessed with a Golden Voice. He can sing the Physics textbook. He is the epitome of positive chi. He does not subscribe to the notion that he is owed anything by anyone. He believes you can be all you want to be if you believe in yourself, and if you believe no one owes you anything.
So what was life like for Julius in his formative years? Who is this giant amongst us? Julius was born and bred in Waterhouse, located in Kingston 11, Jamaica. In the 1970s and 80s, Waterhouse was a torn community. Rival political factions dominated different parts of his beloved hometown. This resulted in constant violent clashes between warring factions. His family bond was very strong and resolute with both of his parents being fully integral in steering him along the right path. His parents were determined to give him a better life.
To paint a little picture of Julius’s hometown, Waterhouse is a typical inner city community. Waterhouse is also the birthplace of Olympic and World Championship multiple gold medal winner – Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, OD (aka the Pocket Rocket because at 152 cm she is super-fast). [OD – the Order of Distinction is a national award given to only a few Jamaican or citizens of other countries who have made significant contributions to Jamaica]. In 2008, she became the first woman from the Caribbean to win the coveted 100m gold at any Olympics.
Like the famous Trench Town, Waterhouse has produced many of Jamaica’s world renowned singers, deejays and musicians. It is also home to one of Jamaica’s pioneering sound systems and recording studio – King Jammys – which not only gave birth to Grammy awards winning artists (such as Shabba Ranks) but has cultivated, produced, recorded and distributed seminal works which have left indelible marks on the vernaculars of the rich and dynamic soul sounds of Jamaica’s musical crooners. [Trench Town is renowned as the birthplace of Ska, Rocksteady, Reggae, Deejaying, Dubbing, Dancehall, American RAP music and Sir Coxsone’s Downbeat Sound System. It is the place which launched Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, Dennis Brown, Abyssinians, U-Roy, Coxsone Dodd’s – Studio One – “Jamaica’s Motown”, Lee “Scratch” Perry OD and many of Jamaica’s great Reggae musicians careers].
His parents – wanting to give him a fighting chance in life – started him off on a sound educational footing. They knew that a solid education, a sound mind set, and a strong family unit were key to helping him rise from the preconceived notion that those born in the inner city are condemned to the inner city. This was against the backdrop that he was from a family which was blessed with natural signing talents from his mother to his uncles. Each of whom were in their own rights acclaimed singers. Each of whom had no formal music training. He was born with the “Golden Microphone.”

ジュリアス・ブラウン(Julius Brown)に会ってください。 – あらゆる意味で真のジャマイカ人であり、カリブ人であることを公言しています。ジュリアスはマレーシアのパームオイルグループが所有する小さなホテルチェーンのシニアマネージャーで、12軒のホテルを運営し、ホテル業界で20年目を迎えましたた。ホテルはマリオットグループとのライセンス契約の下で運営されています。彼はまさに黄金の声に恵まれた男です。彼は物理学の教科書でも歌うことができます。彼は自分を信じて、誰も彼から借りがないと信じていて、なりたいものは何にでもなれると信じています。
“Nobody owes you anything”（誰もあなたから借りはない）という言い回しはジャマイカでよく使われます。誰も自分からは借りがないから、誰も助けてくれない。だから一生懸命勉強して働いて自分のことは自分でしなさい、という意味です。
ジュリアスの若かりし頃の生活はどんなものだったのでしょう？この巨人は誰なのでしょうか？ジュリアスはジャマイカのキングストン11にあるウォーターハウスで生まれ育ちました。1970年代から80年代にかけて、ウォーターハウスは分裂したコミュニティでした。ライバルの政治的派閥が彼の愛する故郷の様々な場所を支配していました。その結果、争いの絶えない派閥間の暴力的な衝突が頻繁に起こりました。彼の家族の絆は非常に強く、両親は彼を正しい道に導くために不可欠な存在でした。彼の両親は、彼の人生をより良いものにしようと決意していました。
ジュリアスの故郷の背景を少し説明すると、ウォーターハウスは典型的なゲットーコミュニティです。ウォーターハウスはオリンピックや世界選手権で金メダルを獲得したシェリー・アン・フレイザー・プライス（身長152cmの彼女が超高速であることから別名ポケットロケットと呼ばれている）の出身地でもあります。2008年、彼女はオリンピックで切望されていた100mの金メダルを獲得したカリブ海出身の初の女性となりました。
