Portland, Jamaica, is renowned for its pristine natural beauty and is emblematic of the pre-European name of Jamaica, “Xaymaca” – Land of wood and water. Portland is believed to be the wettest parish of Jamaica and boasts many rivers, streams and waterfalls. Some of Portland’s more renowned water spots include but are not limited to “Rafting on the Rio Grande”, going for a dive in the mesmerizingly beautiful “Blue Lagoon”, “Marlin Fishing in the Port Antonio Bay”, countless mineral bathing springs, pristine natural minerals enriched springs with potable water for drinking, and the local treasure “Reach Falls”.
Portland’s capital town – Port Antonio, is the playground of the who’s who, the rich the famous and royals the world over. No wonder it is also the setting for many top grossing Hollywood films. Navy Island located just off the coast of Port Antonio, one of the world’s most desired places, needs no introduction. Legend has it that many of Hollywood’s iconic 1940s and 50s movies were made in Portland. This led to film stars, producers, directors, play writers, musicians and many of the world’s top celebrities setting sail to Port Antonio. One of those Hollywood icons was Errol Flynn who called Port Antonio – “heaven on earth” because of its stunningly unspoilt natural beauty. Errol Flynn also found luck and great fortunes in Port Antonio.
He was a man known to have been a regular patron of some of the local bars in Port Antonio, Portland, Jamaica. It is said that he was on a quest to conquer the smooth but deadly intoxicating island spirits – a.k.a. white and brown rum. To his pleasure or dismay – depends on which lenses you view it through – he always came out second in his duel with the fine Jamaican rums. Not only was he a passionate drinker, but he was also a compulsive gamer or as some would say, he liked to take his chances in a game of poker, dominoes or craps. It was while under the influence, legend has it, that he made a very bold wager which changed his fortunes forever. He won Navy Island in a bet at the games table one fortuitous night. This was to change his life for good from being the youthful player to one who fell head over heels in love with a beauty his eyes had beheld which he claimed to be more beautiful than any woman he had ever met. He settled there and started investments in a cattle ranch as well as the then Titchfield Hotel with his third wife.
For those of you who have been intrigued by the “Bond” novels and movies, this is where real life retired British covert agent (a.k.a. spy) Ian Fleming wrote his seminal novels. It is also here that British-born Noel Coward a 1942 Oscar nominated best film writer, actor and songwriter would often go to find his solace at Ian Fleming’s “Goldeneye” extravagant place of abode before building his very own getaway perched on to of a hill with a “View to a Kill” of the angelic blue waters of the calming Caribbean Sea which he named “Blue Harbour”. It is believed that the magic of the docile charm, combined with the intoxicating aroma of mangoes were the fuel of thoughts for author Robin Moore who penned his seminal novel and world acclaimed bestselling novels of all time – “The French Connection” while drowning his thoughts wiling away under a mango tree inhaling the crisp clean air of the gentle cool breeze of the Caribbean Sea which would constantly delicately brush up the coast and fill his mind with all the right words he needed to craft his masterpiece. Indeed.
However, Portland and indeed Port Antonio’s claim to being the birthplace of Jamaican tourism dates back to the booming banana trade which was credited to Lorenzo Dow Baker who owned the then United Fruit Company starting in the late 19th Century. Prior to his interests in banana trade, banana farm holdings and hotel, Baker was shroud ship owner who engaged in two way trades between Jamaica and Boston primarily after the market protections were lifted due to the end of slavery in the late 1800s. He would procure bananas, coconuts, pimento, coffee and bamboo for sale in Boston and then purchase cured meat such as corned pork and corned beef; dried salted codfish and red herring, and flour as well as other non-food items to trade in Port Antonio. Naturally, this two-way trade made him immensely wealthy. By the turn of the 20th Century the Baker’s had helped to transform Port Antonio into a gem of a tourist resort. Their ambitious project led to one of the largest hotels in the Americas, if not the entire Western Hemisphere or the world even at the time. Their hotel – the Titchfield Hotel was a majestic 400+ room masterpiece and the popular place to rub shoulders with the who’s who especially at “afternoon tea”. As mentioned above, this hotel was eventually bought by Errol Flynn who died before he got the chance to transform the property into his own vision. With his passing, the hotel was soon thereafter destroyed by fire. The ruins still remain as a part of the town’s heritage sites.

ポートランドの首都ポート・アントニオは、世界中の富裕層や有名人、王族の遊び場です。多くのハリウッド映画の舞台になっているのも不思議ではありません。ポート・アントニオの沖合にあるネイビーアイランドは、世界で最も人気のある場所の一つで、わざわざここで紹介するまでもありません。伝説によると、ハリウッドの象徴的な1940年代と50年代の映画の多くがポートランドで撮影されたと言われています。これにより、映画スター、プロデューサー、監督、脚本家、ミュージシャン、そして世界のトップセレブリティの多くがポート・アントニオに船出しました。ハリウッドのアイコンの一人であるエロール・フリンは、手つかずの自然の美しさから、ポート・アントニオを「地上の天国」と呼んでいました。エロール・フリンもまた、ポート・アントニオで大きな幸運を見つけました。

ここは実在の引退したイギリスの諜報員、イアン・フレミングが彼の代表的な小説「ジェームズ・ボンド」を書いた場所です。また、イギリス生まれのノエル・カワードは、1942年にアカデミー賞最優秀映画賞にノミネートされた脚本家、俳優、ソングライターでもありますが、イアン・フレミングの「ゴールデンアイ」という贅沢な住居に慰めを求めて、彼が「ブルーハーバー」と名付けた、穏やかなカリブ海の天使のような青い海の「View to a Kill」のある丘の上に自分だけの逃避行先を建てる前に、よくここに行っていたのです。マンゴーの香りと組み合わされたおとなしい魅力の魔法が、作家ロビン・ムーアの思考の燃料になったと考えられています。マンゴーの木の下で、彼は思考を溺れさせながら、カリブ海の穏やかで涼しい風の澄んだ空気を吸い込み、彼の心を傑作を作るために必要なすべての適切な言葉で満たしました。絶対そうに違いありません。
しかし、ポートランドやポート・アントニオがジャマイカ観光の発祥の地であるという主張は、19世紀後半から始まった当時のユナイテッド・フルーツ・カンパニー（United Fruit Company）を所有していたロレンツォ・ダウ・ベイカー（Lorenzo Dow Baker）による活況を呈したバナナ貿易にまで遡ります。バナナ貿易、バナナ農場、ホテルに興味を持つ前、ベイカーはシュラウド船のオーナーで、1800年代後半に奴隷制度が終わり市場の保護が解除された後、ジャマイカとボストンの間で双方向の貿易に従事していました。彼はボストンで販売するためにバナナ、ココナッツ、ピメント、コーヒー、竹を調達し、その後、コンビーフや生肉、乾燥したタラや赤ニシンの塩漬け、小麦粉、その他の雑貨などをポート・アントニオで取引するために購入しました。当然のことながら、この双方向の貿易により、彼は莫大な富を得ることになりました。20世紀に入る頃には、ベイカー一家はポート・アントニオを観光リゾート地の宝石へと変貌させていました。彼らの野心的なプロジェクトは、西半球全体、いや世界とまではいかないまでも、アメリカ大陸で最大級のホテルを建設することになりました。彼らのホテルであるティッチフィールド・ホテルは、400客室以上の部屋を持つ荘厳な傑作で、特に「アフタヌーンティー」の時には有名人と肩を並べる人気の場所でした。前述したように、このホテルは最終的にエロール・フリンによって購入されましたが、彼はこのホテルを彼自身のビジョンに変える機会を得る前に亡くなりました。彼の死去により、ホテルはその後すぐに火災で焼失しました。遺跡は今でも町の遺産の一部として残っています。
