His father worked as a farm overseer for Isaac Matalon (Custos of St. Thomas) – whose family is one of the wealthiest families in Jamaica – on their Stanton Estate near Morant Bay, the Parish Capital famous for the Morant Bay Rebellion of 1865, while tending to his own small holding farm. Back then life was pure fun. He would spend most of his days doing typical boys things running around playing marbles, cricket, football (soccer), picking mangoes, bananas, and helping with harvesting the various items that were grown on the farm. He would dig yams and other tubers, go fishing in the river, go bird shooting, ride donkeys, ride their bicycles around town and play pranks on his friends, siblings and relatives. They lived a fairly good life and were never in want of anything. Back then, most of the things they ate were all natural and straight from the field to their plate. Fresh cows’ milk was available daily. Life was uncomplicated, natural and very simple.
By the time he had matriculated into his first year in high school, Jamaica had started to urbanise a fair bit. As someone from a sports loving family he recalled they would be glued to the radio to listen to boxing, football, athletics, other sports, and the exploits of the sporting heroes of the Caribbean – the West Indies Cricket team as they blazed an indomitable trail around the world. Naturally, he played cricket in high school – which he thoroughly loved and excelled at. But perhaps his most fond memories of high school were the weekends and long school holidays. These were the days they would devote to helping on the farm. By helping to be exact, this was more helping with the eating. A big part of the farming culture back then, which still persists today, was the big communal pot that would be cooked for everyone to partake from.
In fact, he was the envy of many of his friends back in the good old days. This is because whether they were on the Matalons’ farm or his family’s farm, there would be some organised cooking to feed everyone who was helping out on the farm. This was somewhat of a novelty on many of the other smaller farms. As a result all his friends would be game for a day on the farm. They were there for the nyammings. It was fun galore.
Overtime, Donald was exposed to chess and table tennis in high school and took a big liking for table tennis. As the years went by in high school, Donald who was an accomplished cricketing allrounder with the bat (batsman), the ball (bowler) and in the field (fielder) was more inclined to being the scorer. In fact, later as an adult he was nicknamed the Curtly Ambrose of the day. His bowling was very accurate. The truth be told, in addition to his new found love for table tennis, Donald dreaded facing up to the bowling of Patrick Patterson, then of Happy Grove High School in Portland, whose pace was lightning fast. Many tales have been told about how many batsmen had to retire badly hurt while trying to play Patterson’s balls.
Needless to say, Patrick Patterson went on to play for the legendary West Indies Cricket team in 1987 which in the 1970s, 80s and 90s was the number one cricketing team in the world. Similar to the fears schoolboy cricketers had of Patterson, most if not all of the world’s top batsmen were equally if not more terrified of being struck by his bowling. He bowled at over 150 km/hr on average and exceeded 160 km/hr regularly.
Donald went on to represent his high school in table tennis and at the parish level. He was soon the parish champion, before going on to represent his parish – St. Thomas nationally. This culminated in him being called to represent Jamaica in invitational tournaments regionally and internationally. He continued to demonstrate his natural talent for the game of table tennis at the University of the West Indies – Mona , Jamaica (UWI) as a player. He became the university champion and represented the university at the university games. He soon transitioned from being a player / national representative to head coach, team manager and a member of the Jamaica Table Tennis Association board. Over the years, Donald has also given back to his alma mater – the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus as the university’s table tennis coach.

彼が高校1年生になる頃には、ジャマイカはかなり都市化が進んでいました。スポーツ好きな家族の出身であった彼は、ラジオに釘付けになってボクシング、サッカー、陸上、その他のスポーツ、そしてカリブ海のスポーツヒーロー、ウェスト・インディーズ・クリケットチームの活躍を聞き、世界に不屈の道を切り開いたことを思い出しました。当然のことながら、彼は高校時代にクリケットをプレーしていました。しかし、彼の高校時代の最も好きな思い出は、週末と長い学校の休日だったかもしれません。これらは農場の手伝いに専念する日々でした。正確には、食べることを手伝うということでした。当時の農耕文化の大きな部分を占めていたのが、今でも残っています。それは大きな鍋料理をみんなで炊いて食べることでした。

高校時代にチェスや卓球に触れ、卓球をこよなく愛するようになったドナルドは、クリケットにも没頭しバットマン、ボウラー、野手のオールラウンダーとして活躍しました。高校時代は、クリケットの万能選手として活躍していたドナルドは、年を重ねるごとにスコアラー（得点を記録する人物）になる傾向が強くなりました。実際、後に大人になってから、彼は当時のカートリー・アンブローズ（有名なクリケット選手）というニックネームで呼ばれるようになりました。彼のボウリングは非常に正確でした。クリケットに加え卓球への愛を語るのと同時に、実を言うと、彼は当時ポートランドのハッピーグローブ高校のパトリック・パターソン（当時の世界最速のボウラー選手）のボウリングに直面することを恐れていました。パターソンのペースは電光石火のように速くパワフルでした。多くの人々がいうには、大勢のバットマンがパターソンのボールを打とうとした挙句、ひどい怪我をして引退しなければならなかったと語っています。
